Knights earn SUNYAC honors

On Monday, Apr. 15, the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) announced its weekly honors. Three of those awards were given to athletes of SUNY Geneseo: sophomore Alaina Reina, junior Penelope Greene, and senior Zoe Connor. Reina earned Women’s Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week, Greene claimed her second Track Athlete of the Week honor this season, and Connor was named the Field Athlete of the Week.

Reina is coming off of a huge week for the Knights in which they went 3-0 with games against St. John Fisher, Buffalo State, and Potsdam. In the game against St. John Fisher, Reina tallied eight goals for Geneseo, leading them to a 21-11 victory on the road. Reina’s eight goals came on just eight shots, as the sophomore midfielder secured a perfect shooting percentage.

In the game against Buffalo State, Reina again recorded a flawless shooting percentage. She found the back of the net on all four of her shots in the Knights’ dominant 19-6 victory at College Stadium. In the last game of the week, Reina recorded five more goals for a total of 17 goals on just 20 shots in three games. Reina’s stunning performance has helped lead the team to many victories as they look to win yet another SUNYAC championship this season.

Greene had yet another great performance this weekend as she faced Division I competition at the Bucknell Bison Classic. She finished sixth overall in the 10,000m with a time of 35:24.68, making her the top Division III runner in the event. Greene’s time marked the 12th fastest from a Division III runner this season. This honor marks her second of the season, with her first coming in early April after she claimed first overall in the 5,000m at the Geneseo Early Season Invite.

Connor put on an incredible performance at Cortland on Saturday, Apr. 13. She claimed first overall in the shot put with a distance of 12.03m. Later in the event, Connor also claimed the top spot in the hammer throw with a distance of 49.35m. The Scotia, NY native has been a key part of the Knights’ program this year with incredible throws and numerous first-place finishes. Notably, Connor put up two top-three finishes at the University of Rochester Alumni Invitational on Sunday, Apr. 7. In the shot put, Connor recorded a distance of 12.71m and 49.84m in the hammer throw, both scores beating her performance in Cortland.

Both the lacrosse and track and field seasons are coming to a close as the semester winds down. The women’s lacrosse team will look to further improve on their great record with a few more key SUNYAC wins before the postseason tournament begins on Saturday, Apr. 27. Track and field has more remaining events, as well, including the SUNYAC Championships beginning on Friday, May 3, and the NCAA Championships which begin on Thursday, May 23. Both teams are coming off incredible seasons as lacrosse won the SUNYAC title last season, and track and field will look to take home their seventh consecutive outdoor title.
