Nathan Hubbard is a communication major who has served as sports editor of The Lamron for the past year. Despite coming into his role with the newspaper hesitantly and at the behest of his roommate, Hubbard has become one of The Lamron’s strongest supporters since he first joined in the fall semester of 2022. With his graduation quickly approaching, it is only fitting that Hubbard be given the “senior treatment” and opportunity to express his story at SUNY Geneseo.

When asked why he joined The Lamron, Hubbard said “After the first few semesters with COVID, I was very content being a hermit and staying in my room with no extracurriculars to my name…  I initially had no desire to join the paper.” He continued, “I was dragged to their table at the Club Expo and forced to go to the first meeting by my roommate.” Hubbard learned promptly, however, that The Lamron was set to become one of his second homes on campus, saying, “My favorite part has got to be the other people that are in [The Lamron]. It’s a really fun crew and it makes it feel a lot more fun than the level of work makes it seem at times.”

Hubbard came to SUNY Geneseo in the fall of 2020 with an undeclared major and spent the first number of semesters focused on a possible future in psychology. He made sure to point out that after eventually declaring as a psychology major, that “it lasted all of about two minutes… from there I was pretty determined to drop out of school. I just really hated it, but my eyes were opened to the field of communication and I figured I would give it at least a semester before I did anything drastic.”

Hubbard is more than thankful now that he decided to stick with it as his journey to the communication major led him to helpful and supportive faculty members like Dr. Lee Pierce and Dr. Andrew Herman. When asked about their contributions to his successes at Geneseo, Hubbard stated, “Lee was the first communication professor that I had, and it was a really great introduction to the major. It was such a different way of teaching than any other professor I’d had at that point.” He continued about Dr. Herman saying, “he has been so helpful along the way and taught a great course.”

Along with joining The Lamron, Hubbard took on other roles in communication-based organizations on campus, as well. He has worked in the athletic communications department for multiple years while also working as a communications intern at the Interfaith Center off-campus, promoting events and heading their social media endeavors. Other than the newspaper, the role that takes up most of Hubbard’s time is as host of Chalk Talk, a weekly sports talk show that airs on Mondays at 6:30 p.m. on 89.3 WGSU, Geneseo’s radio station.

After graduation, Hubbard plans on beginning his career in the communication field as a media specialist while staying in the Rochester area, where he was raised, for the foreseeable future. He looks back fondly on his four years at Geneseo stating, “It’s been a really interesting experience. There’s been some moments where I was like ‘there’s no way that this is a real place.’ It’s been an awesome four years and…I really couldn’t be happier that I chose Geneseo.” Hubbard continued, “It’s sometimes beautiful, sometimes under construction, but the school has given me a lot of opportunities that I wouldn’t have otherwise had. I’ve been able to do things that I never thought I would have been interested in. I’m very grateful.”
