Invasion of Privacy: Business Manager Camryn Marshall

Over the past two semesters, senior finance major Camryn Marshall has served as Business Manager of The Lamron. Despite coming to SUNY Geneseo undeclared in the fall of 2020, and even stepping away from the college after her second semester, Marshall has found her place on campus and in the professional world through her efforts in leadership roles both with The Lamron and beyond.

When asked why she joined The Lamron, Marshall stated that she, “wished [she] had joined clubs sooner but really hadn’t seen any other e-board positions that genuinely interested [her].” She added, “the Business Manager position was different. As a newspaper, we have actual funds that need to be managed, whereas treasurers and other positions like that are just going through the motions.”

As many Lamron e-board members would attest, the financial aspect of the newspaper has been critical and, at times, very confusing over the past few years. Marshall has done an amazing job of getting things back on track for the organization, and has had a great time doing it; “I really like this job because it was a challenge, but I was able to figure it out.”

Outside of The Lamron, Marshall has acted as treasurer of the Women in Business club, portfolio manager of the Student Managed Investment Fund (SMIF), and passed her CFA Level One Exam, the first step in becoming a Chartered Financial Analyst, since returning to Geneseo in the spring of 2022. She credits Geneseo’s addition of a finance major as her main reason for returning to the college, “It sounded a lot more like something I’d want to do.” Marshall added, “Accounting is just too rule-based and boring for me, so I began taking finance classes at the beginning of my junior year.”

When asked about her experiences with finance courses, Marshall stated the direction and help of Dr. Chinmay Jain has been pivotal in her successes; “He’ll have a class of 30 students and if every single person came up to him and asked for advice or literally anything, he isn’t just there to teach—he’s personable and will help out. I’ve learned the most from his classes.”

It was in a course with Dr. Jain that Marshall first heard of the CFA Level One Exam, a professional test for which she would go on to spend around 200 hours studying for during her senior year. Marshall is one of only 7,450, or 44%, of candidates who passed the exam in February 2024, and will graduate as the only member of the 2024 SUNY Geneseo class with that distinction. It is an extraordinary feat for anyone still in college to put in the effort necessary to pass an exam like that, and it speaks volumes about the type of person Marshall is and her motivation for the financial field.

Marshall’s financial background started even before college as she created an online crystal and jewelry shop as a senior in high school. Speaking of the business and her favorite aspects, Marshall said, “I liked crystals and wanted to make something with crystals so I made mirrors and jewelry… you can always make something new with different shapes, sizes, types of crystals, and techniques. There’s virtually no end to what you can do.” Like most of what she has done, Marshall’s business has been a success with over 430 sales on Etsy and 1,300 followers on Instagram. You can find her work listed on her Etsy shop WaterYourBrain, and on Instagram @wateryourbrain.co.

Following graduation, Marshall will be joining NBT Bank’s Management Development Program in Norwich, New York before joining the company in a full-time position thereafter.

Her work across campus and in the professional world is inspiring for those around her, and we can only thank her for the vital work she has done with The Lamron and wish her the best of luck in the next step of her journey!
