SUNY Geneseo Associate Professor of Art History Alla Myzelev is raising awareness for Ukrainian refugees fleeing the country following the invasion by Russia and attempting to connect Ukrainian college students with American colleges, to finish their degrees. 

The Relay for Life will be held on Saturday, Apr. 30 as a fundraiser to benefit the American Cancer Society (ACS). The fundraiser will be held in the Merritt Athletic Center from 4 p.m. to 4 a.m.

In response to a rise in active COVID cases on campus and in Livingston County, SUNY Geneseo recommends that students wear masks. The recommendation came in an email to Geneseo students on Apr. 8.  

The space on campus formerly known as the Knight Spot is in the process of being renovated and will be renamed the Multicultural Center. The center will serve as a lounge and community space for students on campus, as well as an event center for culture clubs. 

Members of the fraternity Alpha Chi Rho (AXP), also known as “Crows,” have been collecting money outside of the Integrated Science Center this week as part of their annual “Deep Freeze” fundraiser. Deep Freeze is part of AXP’s fundraising for SUNY Geneseo’s Relay for Life, a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. 

The Little Free Thoughts Library is an anonymous resource for Geneseo students to share thoughts, feelings, and ideas with others. Created by Ashlee Kuzemchak, the library aims to provide a sense of community and a place for students to share feelings without fear of judgment. 

The SUNY Geneseo Center for Local and Municipal History, in collaboration with the Geneseo History Department, will host a book seminar with Justin Murphy, author of Your Children Are Very Greatly in Danger: School Segregation in Rochester, New York.

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, a month dedicated to raising awareness about sexual and domestic violence, resources for victims, and ways to get involved and reduce incidents of violence. 

On Friday, Mar. 4, dozens of students and members of the Geneseo community rallied together to call for peace in Ukraine in Village Park on the corner of Main Street. The demonstration was organized by Peace Action Geneseo (PAG) in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which began on Feb. 24. 

On Jan. 29, an anonymous professor sent a Canvas announcement to their class requesting information on whether or not students were experiencing eye irritations, possibly as a result of the new UVC lights installed in certain classrooms as a COVID-19 precaution.

The SUNY Geneseo Department of Theatre and Dance Studies is hosting the dance performance In Clear Sight by the Geneseo Dance Ensemble. Performances will be held in the Alice Austin Theater from Mar. 3-5 at 7:30 P.M. and on Mar. 6 at 2 P.M.

SUNY Geneseo has been approved to offer two new majors in the Fall 2022 semester: finance and data analytics. Both majors have previously been offered by the School of Business as minors but will be available to take as majors beginning next semester. 

SUNY Geneseo has been in the process of changing the general education curriculum to include less credits and classes that fit into broader skill areas. Students will be allowed to pick between the old and new curricula starting in the Fall 2022 semester.  

There are several research opportunities available to undergraduate students in the sciences at SUNY Geneseo. These opportunities are offered by professors in a range of disciplines and are useful to any students looking to apply to graduate studies in the sciences.

In a campus-wide email, SUNY Geneseo announced that wearing masks on campus will be made optional beginning Monday, Mar. 7. Students that are not fully vaccinated will still be required to wear masks in public places such as classrooms and common areas.

The SUNY Geneseo Student Council for Exceptional Children will host a Scholastic Book Fair with the School of Education beginning Feb. 23 at Geneseo. The event will take place within the Kinetic Gallery of the MacVittie Union and will run through Mar. 4. Daily hours can be found on the Geneseo events calendar.

SUNY Geneseo’s TEDx organization will be hosting this semester’s TEDx event on Sunday, Mar. 6. Tickets are ten dollars and can be purchased at universe.com. This semester’s theme is “Standing at a Crossroads,” focusing on cultural resets that we are seeing globally.

The SUNY Geneseo symphony orchestra will perform a concert inspired by the music and themes of the hit Netflix K-drama “Squid Game.” The performance will take place on Feb. 27 at 3 p.m. in the Wadsworth Auditorium.

The deadline to submit a general application for scholarships offered by SUNY Geneseo is Mar. 1. These scholarships are offered to Geneseo students only, and one general application can make students eligible for hundreds of scholarships.
